Provisional data shows that July 2023 is the wettest July ever recorded in Ireland.
Ireland was lashed by 178.9mm of rain last month – more than double the usual amount of rain in July months.
The previous record was set in 2009.
Record rainfall was seen at many weather stations including Phoenix Park in Dublin.
Donegal saw extreme rainfall on July 22nd when a pluvial event brought up to 82mm of rain in the East Donegal region, which caused flooding in Raphoe and Castlefin.
Consistent low-pressure systems are to blame for the almost-constant rain impacting tourism and farming.
Keith Lambkin, Head of Climate Services Division at Met Éireann, told RTE Radio 1 that climate change is a factor.
“As we see the world warm, we are seeing weather patterns change,” he said.
“July this year is not only the hottest month worldwide, it’s the hottest month ever recorded worldwide.”
Unsettled weather is set to continue into the first half of August, according to the national forecaster.
This week will see low pressure dominating and bringing rain or showers on most days.
“More in the way of sunny spells as we head through the 2nd half of this week,” Met Eireann said.
“Temperatures on the cool side of average after midweek due to northerly winds.”
