The body which represent voluntary and community groups across Donegal has welcomed today’s decision by An Garda Siochana to leave Donegal as a ‘stand-alone’ division for policing.

It comes as Garda Commissioner Drew Harris revised the proposed Policing Model for the North West.

It had initially been planned to amalgamate Donegal along with Sligo and Leitrim into one main Garda division.

The Donegal Public Partnership Network welcomed the decision to continue to operate Donegal as a stand-alone Division.

Chairperson of the Donegal PPN, Joe Boland, said he now hoped Gardai will be given the adequate resources they require going forward.

“We would like to thank Commissioner Harris and the Garda Senior Leadership Team for taking on board the concerns of those from within the county.

“We also hope that, going forward, the division will get the support Government to ensure that Garda operating in the County receive the resources needed to ensure they can deliver a high-quality service to the people of Donegal.

“We call on all those in public office to focus on ensuring that the Garda in the Division now are provided with the resources required.

“Lastly, we would like to acknowledge the support from the Donegal Joint Policing Committee, local TDs, Councillors and Senator who lobbied on behalf of the people of Donegal.”
