As the new school year commences, Gardaí are urging drivers to be extra cautious on the roads.
‘Slow down and be prepared for the unexpected’ is the message from gardaí in Donegal.
Parents are also being asked to teach children the basics of road safety.
Garda Sean Sweeney of Buncrana Garda Station, speaking in a community appeal today, said: “Slow down in areas where bus collections and drop-offs are occurring and in the general areas of schools.
“Expect the unexpected. Be prepared to stop suddenly and leave additional travel time with the extra traffic on the roads.
“Please don’t park in an illegal manner when doing school runs, don’t block driveways or footpaths and this may restrict emergency access or force others to venture out onto the road which could be very dangerous.”
Garda Sweeney also called on parents to speak to their children about safety on the road, helpful resources are available on www.rsa.ie
