Gardaí in Donegal are reminding the public to be on alert for a heinous email scam falsely accusing people of child pornography crimes.
The email has been doing the rounds again, purporting to be from the Director of Public Prosecutions. The email shows logos of the Irish flag, Europol and the EU.
The attachment is in the form of a letter, accusing a person of visiting sites relating to child exploitation and saying that they are going to be prosecuted for child pornography, sex trafficking and viewing photos and videos of a sexual nature.
The letter states that the recipient has 72 hours to respond with your version of the facts, accompanied by an identity document to fix your level of responsibility to avoid criminal prosecution.
Garda Sean Sweeney, speaking in this week’s community information appeal, said: “An Garda Siochana and the DPP’s office will never send a letter like this to you by email or post. We ask you to never send a copy of any identity document to an unknown email that contacts you out of the blue. Use official sites or emails for communication and only then if you have typed an address as opposed to clicking a link.
“If you have any doubts please ring your local station and ask for advice.”
