An Irish couple have been killed after being struck by a car while holidaying in Rome.
The husband and wife were pedestrians who were hit by a car being driven by a 54-year-old man.
The couple’s identity has not yet been released.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed the victims were Irish.
The department said it is providing consular assistance to the families of the man and woman.
The pedestrians were killed after being struck by a car on the Via Cristoforo Colombo in the south of the Italian capital just before 1pm.
The tragedy happened near the Presidential Palace, Castel Porziano, and the pedestrians were pronounced dead at the scene by emergency services.
The driver of the car, a 54-year-old man from Rome, remained at the scene and tried to “lend assistance”. Italian news agency ANSA said.
The driver is believed to have suffered minor injuries in the collision and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
The bodies of the two Irish citizens were taken to the Tor Vergata hospital where postmortems will take place.
