Donegal’s Eve Belle gets personal with first independent EP

Gweedore singer-songwriter Eve Belle is bouncing back with Sharp Relief, her first independent release since 2017.

The new EP, out on September 29th, is preceded by a new single, TV, out today.

Very few of us have emerged from the last few years unchanged, Eve Belle being no exception. Taking the time inside to hone her craft and explore her own psyche, Eve Belle has created three new songs with new sounds and a new attitude.

Sharp Relief comes with a distinct Ulster slant, featuring collaboration by acclaimed NI songwriter Ciaran Lavery, and supported by the National Lottery through the Arts Council for Northern Ireland. Produced in Belfast’s Start Together studio with producer Darragh Tibbs, these songs see Eve Belle bring more maturity and wit to her sound than ever before. Two of the tracks (Tether and Lily) have debuted with the Ulster Orchestra in Belfast’s Ulster Hall.

Blurring the lines between what’s real and what’s all in your head, TV marks Eve Belle’s first single release since 2020. “I felt like I had only so much empathy and compassion to go around and I was feeling everything so intensely,” she says, letting the boundaries between the people in her life and the characters on-screen bleed into each other. These frank feelings of isolation and declining mental health, as well as the overstimulation of being re-introduced to the world, represent an earnest and fresh approach to her craft.

Lyrically exceptional and eager to bring her insides outside, Eve Belle’s Sharp Relief explores both her creative ability and own psyche like never before. “This was that post-pandemic feeling of overstimulation at being plunged back into the world and feeling pressured to be back to normal (if there’s such a thing). It’s the most honest I’ve been about my mental health and sexuality and I think it’s a better representation of my sound as it is now. (…) It’s extremely personal, dealing with some inelegant emotions, but that’s what I love about it.”

TV is available to stream from Friday 15th September
