Energy credits of €400 per home set to be included in Budget

Energy credits totalling €400 per home are set to form part of Budget 2024.

Negotiations are continuing but it seems likely too that mortgage interest relief for homeowners worst hit by European Central Bank rate hikes will be introduced.

The measure could see these mortgage holders receive 20% of the rate increase, but it would be capped at a certain amount, possibly upwards of €1,500.

The mortgage interest relief is being described as “targeted” at those in financial difficulty.

That means a mortgage balance or mortgage arrears might be taken into account before a homeowner receives the payment.

The Budget is also likely to give the go-ahead to the phasing in of free books in secondary schools, according to RTE News.

A rise of more than €12 in welfare and pension payments is also potentially on the cards but the increases might be phased in.

Core spending in the Budget will increase by €5.2bn.
