Accidents occuring ‘far too often’ at Churchill junction

A renewed call has been made for crash barriers at Keelogs junction in Churchill following two more accidents over Christmas.

Thankfully no injuries were reported in the recent incidents, but Cllr Donal ‘Mandy’ Kelly is calling on the council to act now rather than later on the issue.

The junction lies between James Doherty Coaches and Churchill Quarries.

Cllr Kelly had a motion before Donegal County Council calling for safety barriers both at the Keelogs junction and directly across from Churchill quarries. At the time, the council said there was no funding available but that the local authority would seek funding for the works.

Speaking today, Cllr Kelly said: “We recently passed the 2024 budget, which stated the council continues to provide funding for works to repair vehicle restraint systems. Once again I’ll be asking Donegal County Council roads engineers at our next meeting to look at providing funding for these major safety issues to be addressed by erecting crash barriers at these locations in Churchill.

“This junction is also a lift and drop off point for local children going to and from school. If something serious happens here it’s too late.”

Cllr Kelly said he also intends to ask the council’s Roads Engineer to conduct a safety assessment on the road surface and the camber of the road, to ensure it meets the required standards.

“These accidents are occurring far too often and there may be an issue with the road also,” Cllr Kelly said.

“Thankfully there have been no serious accidents to date but the council needs to act now rather than later.”
