Donegal County Council is inviting the public to get involved in developing the future plans for the old Courthouse in Letterkenny as an exciting tourist attraction by coming along to a drop-in event on Wednesday 17th January 2024.

The project will focus on the reuse of the historic Courthouse building as a major tourist attraction with the aim of increasing visitor numbers to Letterkenny’s historic town centre and to the wider Northwest region.

The drop-in event is being held on Wednesday 17th January 2024 where the public are invited to call into the old Courthouse, Letterkenny, anytime between 2pm-8pm to find out more about the ideas for the reuse of the building and to have their say. The consultancy team led by EPIC Heritage Consulting Ltd and the Regeneration Team of Donegal County Council will be available to explain the ideas for a tourist attraction that are being explored and to hear people’s thoughts and ideas.

Cllr Kevin Bradley, Mayor of Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District said, “The old Letterkenny Courthouse is in a fantastic location in the heart of the town centre and we are very excited about the potential it offers to create an amazing tourist attraction. I am encouraging the public to come along to the old Courthouse and get involved.”

Liam Ward, Director of Service, Community Development & Planning Services said, “The Courthouse is a great asset that we would like to see redeveloped to realise Letterkenny as a vibrant tourist destination in itself and as a gateway to the exceptional offerings across the county and region”.

Mr Ward added, “We believe there are many stories that could be told through the redevelopment of the Courthouse and we want the help of the wider community to identify the best tourist experience possible.”

The arrangements for the drop-in event are:

When: Wednesday 17th January 2024, anytime between 2pm-8pm

Where:  The old Courthouse, Letterkenny via the entrance on Justice Walsh Road

The project is funded by the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF) with match funding provided by Donegal County Council. It forms part of Council’s wider Leitirceanainn 2040 Regeneration programme (www.letterkenny2040.ie)
