Gairmscoil Chú Uladh invites prospective students to their Open Day on Tuesday 16th January 2024 from 10am to 2pm.

Gairmscoil Chú Uladh is situated in the scenic surroundings of Béal an Átha Móir four kilometres from Fintown village. Gairmscoil Chú Uladh’s remote setting is easily accessible from Letterkenny, Ballybofey, Donegal Town and surrounding areas (see map below).

GCU has been providing quality Gaeltacht education through the medium of Irish for children of the Gaeltacht Láir and beyond for the past forty years.

Gairmscoil Chú Uladh Open day 16th January

GCU is a co-educational, multi-denominational, Gaeltacht school under the management of the Donegal E.T.B. and places the core-values of Respect, Care, Community, Equality and Quality Teaching and Learning as the cornerstone of its vision and with that the School and the Board of Management is committed to ensuring that Respect of Gaelic culture and language is at the heart of what Gairmscoil Chú Uladh stands for along with an environment that puts equality to the fore, that all students be given opportunities to grow, to be challenged and to blossom. Gairmscoil Chú Uladh promotes inclusion and acceptance as being paramount in the holistic development of today’s youth as highlighted by the core values listed above.

The school meets the learning needs of native speakers as well as students who are not native speakers, through extra classes, help from the Cúntóir Teanga and providing extra support.

A good pupil teacher ratio along with team teaching in Irish, French and Maths for first years allows GCU to scaffold the learning of all students irrespective of ability. Gairmscoil Chú Uladh offers the full range of Department approved courses from the Junior Certificate Schools Programme, Junior Cycle, Transition Year, Leaving Certificate, Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme and the Leaving Certificate Applied as well as Level 1 and Level 2 Learning programmes.

Gairmscoil Chú Uladh Students

With all Junior Cycle students partaking in the Junior Certificate School Programme from first year it creates an inclusive learning experience and gives all students the advantages of being active learners and trackers of progress from first through to third year. With this foundation coupled up with an excellent Transition Year programme of which there is no charge on students, it prepares students excellently for the more self-directed learning needed for the Leaving Certificate and onwards into third level.

The Irish Times feeder schools list for 2023 published recently sees Garimscoil Chú Uladh featured in 2nd place in Co. Donegal for progression into third level. With 94% of the 2023 Leaving Certificate class attending third level it highlights the benefits of education through the medium of Irish and highlights the strengths and advantages of being in a small school with better access to teachers, facilities and extra curricular activities.

Speaking recently to parents of primary school students, School Principal Ciarán Mac Ruaidhrí spoke of the advantages of immersive education and the advantages of bilingualism for students entering secondary education.

To anyone reading this article, if their child enjoys the Irish Language and would like to pursue secondary education in our safe, caring, rural environment, we look forward to hearing from you.

The school welcomes students of all backgrounds who are interested in pursuing their secondary education through the medium of Irish and who are willing to take the steps necessary to grow in the native language.

Currently students travel from Ballyshannon via Donegal Town with the route catered for by Curran’s buses.

The Glenties and Ballybofey areas are catered for by Marley’s Buses, Mc Geehan Coaches and Kia Cabs. Students from the Glenswilly, Churchill and Letterkenny areas are catered for by Doherty’s buses. The central rural location of Gairmscoil Chú Uladh makes it very accessible for students from as far afield as Ballyshannon to Letterkenny, and Ardara to Ballybofey.

A new extension is planned for 2024 which sees three new state of the art classrooms and the addition of Metalwork as an additional subject area, this enhances the capacity of the school to cater for a wider subject range into the fields of engineering and technology. With STEM subjects a key area of learning for future learners Gairmscoil Chú Uladh is well placed to bring immersive education to the areas of engineering and technology.
