Cadet Cormac O’Donnell is having a smooth take-off as he begins his journey to becoming a pilot.

The former St. Columba’s student’s lifelong dream has been to fly, and last week he departed for the prestigious Aer Lingus Future Pilot Programme.

Cormac was one of 30 successful candidates to be chosen from over 6,000 applicants.

The son of Brendan and Mags O’Donnell from Ballybofey, Cormac had his sights set on the skies well before completing his Leaving Cert last summer at St. Columba’s College Stranorlar. He’s also a skilled hammer thrower with Lifford Strabane AC.

Cormac called into the college earlier this week before embarking on his 14-month intensive training to be a commercial pilot with Aer Lingus at the Spanish flight training school, FTE Jerez.

The St Columba’s community shared their pride for their past pupil and said: “The college community wishes Cormac all the best on his exciting journey towards a fulfilling career as a pilot. His achievement serves as an inspiration to young students who aspire to pursue their dreams through hard work and dedication. We look forward to following Cormac’s progress and watching him soar to new heights. Congratulations, Cormac!”
