The film careers of dozens of young people from Letterkenny has started.

It comes after pupils from Scoil Cholmcille in Letterkenny secured the prestigious ‘Drama’ prize for Outstanding Achievement in Film-making, at the esteemed 18th National FÍS Film Awards at the Helix in Dublin on Wednesday.

Hosted by RTE’s Sinead Kennedy, the event was run by the Institute of Art, Design, and Technology (IADT) in collaboration with Oide Technology in Education.

First established as a grassroots initiative aimed at nurturing Ireland’s budding film-making talent, the participation of over 1,500 students at the annual awards ceremony speaks volumes about its impact.

The ceremony, which was broadcast online, was co-produced by students of IADT’s National Film School and live streamed on the official FÍS website.

Reflecting on the momentous occasion, Mr. Odhrán Mc Gowan, teacher at Scoil Cholmcille, expressed great pride in his students’ accomplishment.

“It was brilliant to witness their creativity and hard work being recognised at a national level’, he shared with Donegal Daily.

“The film production process developed the pupils’ artistic skills, improved their problem-solving abilities and nurtured critical thinking.

“They also improved their teamwork, communication and skills using technology.”

Mr. Mc Gowan also spoke of the fantastic atmosphere at the ceremony and remarked on how his pupils will remember this occasion as a standout moment in their years at Scoil Cholmcille.

The moment was made even more special knowing that their fellow pupils were tuning in to watch the awards ceremony live from their classrooms at the school.

Well done to all involved in this wonderful achievement.
