A Donegal driver was among the worst in the country yesterday when it came to speed detections during National Slow Down Day.
The motorist was clocked doing 139km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N13 at Lurgybrack, on the main Letterkenny to Ballybofey road.
In the first fourteen hours of National Slow Down Day nationally, GoSafe vans detected 423 vehicles travelling in excess of the applicable speed limit. The highest speed, 160km/h in a 100km/h zone, was recorded on the N7 Castlewarden South Kill in Kildare.
This co-ordinated day-of-action was aimed at preventing speeding and reducing the number of people being killed on roads in Ireland.
In the first 59 days of 2024, 36 people have been killed in fatal road traffic collisions on Irish roads. That is four more lives than on the same day last year.
An Garda Síochána continues to appeal to drivers to comply with speed limits in order to reduce the number of speed related collisions, save lives and reduce injuries on our roads.
