Donegal sisters shaking up the fashion scene with sustainable streetwear

Two Donegal sisters are helping us be more sustainable in style through their Letterkenny store and newly launched website.

SourcedBySab.com, which goes live today, is Donegal’s first website for premium vintage and sustainable streetwear.

It may be an April Fool’s Day launch, but there’s no joke about the dedication and creative input into Sab’s collection of handpicked casual clothing.

Sadhbha Medlar launched her business in 2021. She had just completed her degree in mechatronic engineering at DCU when lockdown struck and she let loose her entrepreneurial mindset to setting up the business from her bedroom.

At the outset, Sab was running the business alone, selling online on the Depop platform where she quickly got onto the top sellers program.

As the sales and demand grew month on month, Sadhbha’s sister, Maeve, joined the business in November 2021 (whilst completing her business degree at DCU) when they opened a physical store at Canal Road, Letterkenny.

The concept store stocks a wide range of handpicked premium vintage and sustainable streetwear clothing for males and females. Brands include Nike, Carharrt, Stussy to name a few and is the first Irish retailer to stock Pellador (an exciting Irish brand that merges knitwear and sportswear).

SourcedBySab secured the first-ever Irish contract for House of Sunny, an up market brand in the world of sustainable fashion, headquartered in London.

It’s not just a store, but a vibrant community. The shop is a hub for people to enjoy a relaxed coffee on ‘Social Saturdays’, meet new people and learn how to make more conscious fashion choices.

This is what truly sets SourcedBySab apart – the dedication to community engagement and education. As an example, over the past year, they have hosted meditation classes with Hannah’s Habits, breathing workshops with the renowned Dr Easkey Britton, surf skate socials, Irish Film and music nights, and clothing swap shops, to name a few!

The SourcedBySab brand identifies with a few key themes; Sustainability, creativity and community. The love of the local Donegal outdoors also appears as a running theme across the brand.

The love for the brand encouraged the team to begin exploring developing SBS’s first own-brand products – the SBS beanie hats dropped in Autumn 2024, and each batch sold out within a few days. The team are currently working behind the scenes on the first SourcedBySab hoodie – the theme being “your local streetwear stór.”

The business is now thriving and has been nominated for several awards, including Best New Business and Young Entrepreneur in the Letterkenny Chamber Business Awards 2023.

“The brilliance is in the team,” said Sab. The founders are supported by other part-time Gen Z’ers, including Thomas Reynolds, (a UCD computer science student) and Oisin Morris. Oisin started as part of the Transition Year placement program but now works occasional days when not at school.

The Medlar sisters and team are excited about taking the business to new levels whilst promoting sustainable fashion. “We are proud to grow a business with global potential from our hometown of Letterkenny. Step by step,” says Sab.
