Countryside Bird Survey 2024: Donegal volunteers needed!

written by Staff Writer April 2, 2024

April marks the kick-off of BirdWatch Ireland’s annual Countryside Bird Survey and Donegal volunteers are currently being sought.

The survey monitors the status of common and widespread breeding birds (Robin, Wren, Blackbird, Chaffinch, etc.), as well as some of the scarcer ones.

This important survey depends on the efforts of more than 200 observers each year and is coordinated by BirdWatch Ireland and funded by the National Parks and Wildlife Service. It involves two early-morning walks in the countryside, about four weeks apart, to count birds in a set 1km square. The work is done and dusted by 9am!

The Countryside Bird Survey is one of Ireland’s long-term bird monitoring surveys. It was established in 1998 and has since been undertaken annually.

Click here for more information, including a map of available squares. To get involved please email the CBS Coordinator, Andrew Lynch – alynch@birdwatchireland.ie
