Two green businesses based in Inishowen are in the final of the RDS Irish Forest and Woodlands Awards and the RDS Circular Economy Awards, taking place next week.
Ross Buchanan’s woodland in Carndonagh (pictured) has been shortlisted in the Production Forestry Category which aims to recognise excellence in the management of production forestry.
Living Green organic compost in Quigley’s Point has been shortlisted in the SME category in the RDS Circular Economy Awards.
Ross Buchanan’s woodland is almost as far north as it is possible to go, and contains what is probably the most northerly oak stand being managed for quality timber on the island. The woodland is a diverse mixture of productive stands in an incredibly beautiful setting; which is being managed using a complex range of management styles and objectives.
Living Green started out in 2003 as a commercial worm farm and over the last 21 years has evolved into so much more. Along with breeding worms Living Green now manufactures 3 types of certified organic compost; along with certified organic frozen wheatgrass, turmeric and beetroot shots.
The awards ceremony takes place as part of the ‘Finding Common Ground’ Festival on Friday 3rd May. The inaugural two-day event is being delivered as one of the RDS Foundation social impact programmes.
It will incorporate presentations and panel discussions exploring how Ireland can harness the benefits of our natural resources and the circular economy with a view to creating increased awareness, education and identification of solutions to act on. Alongside this, a number of awards ceremonies will take place to celebrate best practice in these areas.
