Frustrated residents living near the Letterkenny to Drumkeen junction on the N13 met last night to discuss their road safety concerns.

They say they are living in constant fear of high-speed traffic with inadequate lighting and lack of road safety measures.

A number of locals living along this stretch of road met at Corravaddy Woods car park to voice their on-going concerns regarding the speed of vehicles travelling on this stretch of road. The area straddles the Letterkenny MD and the Lifford- Stranorlar MD. Both local election Aontú candidates for the areas, Mary T Sweeney and Rebecca McDaid, attended the meeting.

Residents at last night’s meeting at Corravaddy Woods car park.

“Make no mistake – this is a crisis! We cannot wait any longer while lives are at risk,” Ms Sweeney said.

“We refuse to let lives be lost or forever changed due to council negligence or delay. It’s time they prioritised our safety. “We demand Donegal County Council carry out an immediate safety review on the road.”

Ms Sweeney added that a surgery she carried out had identified eight main areas of concern but the discussion from residents identified other important sections of interest. There were calls for road ripples and ramps to slow cars down on the straights and signs warning of animals and children at play, while trees and bushes narrowing the road need to be cut back.

“We plan to make immediate representations to the council and we are looking for them to install adequate lighting and chevron markers where the road meets the main N13 Letterkenny to Drumkeen road (main pic) as it’s extremely difficult to see here at night,” addes Ms Sweeney.

She pointed out there have already been a number of accidents in the area in recent months.

A further meeting is planned at Corravaddy Woods car park next week at 7.00pm to analyse feedback from residents and to prepare a report for council.
