Letterkenny mayor calls out ‘disgrace’ of derelict building at St. Conal’s

Mayor of Letterkenny Kevin Bradley has called for investment to breathe new life into the derelict ‘1901’ building on the St. Conal’s Campus.

The former psychiatric hospital, known as the ‘new building’, has stood vacant for decades.

Break-ins and ransacking incidents have led to the building being boarded up, but a ‘security breach’ last year saw a TikTok creator walk inside to find boxes of historical patient records.

“It’s a disgrace that it’s lying in this condition,” said Independent Cllr Kevin Bradley, after requesting Donegal County Council to collaborate with the HSE this week.

“They are crying out for space in the hospital, and for space everywhere, and it’s important the council engage with them,” Cllr Bradley told Tuesday’s meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District

Cllr Pauric McGarvey (IND) added: “It’s an iconic building and it is a wasted space, the HSE is using rented accommodation throughout the town for offices and surgeries when this campus could be used.”

The Council is now set to write to the Manager of the St Conal’s Campus to convey the concerns.

Last year, the HSE indicated that the refurbishment of the ‘1901’ building is a priority as part of an accommodation review on the St. Conal’s Campus.
