Actions of some Donegal drivers this week were ‘shocking’ – Gardaí

Gardaí have described the actions of some Donegal drivers as ‘shocking’ despite ongoing high profile roads safety campaigns.

“Unfortunately, the road safety message is still not being taken on board by everybody,” a garda spokesperson said.

“Our Roads Policing Unit in Letterkenny have arrested a number of drivers on suspicion of drug driving over the past few days. The lack of care shown for road safety by some road users is shocking.”

On Monday, Gardaí from Letterkenny Roads Policing Unit arrested a driver who tested positive for cannabis. The car was seized as the driver was not insured.

On Wednesday they detected a learner driver who was unaccompanied. This driver also tested positive for cannabis and their car was seized.

Another arrest was made by Letterkenny Gardaí on Wednesday after a driver was detected travelling at speed. The motorist subsequently tested positive for cocaine and will be brought before the local court at a future date.

“Our mobility app can confirm in a matter of seconds if a vehicle has insurance or not and it is updated daily with information from all insurance providers,” the spokesperson added.

“Do not take unnecessary risks on the roads. Slow down and never, ever drive while under the influence of alcohol/drugs.”
