Veteran Sinn Fein campaigner, Tony McDaid, has been eliminated following Count 3 in the Lifford-Stranorlar LEA at a tense Finn Valley Centre in Stranorlar.

Having retired from local politics 20 years ago, McDaid decided to make a comeback after Liam Doherty decided no to run in this year’s election.

Following the distribution of Garvan Connolly’s 533 votes, the current standing is as follows:

Martin Scanlon (Ind) who topped the poll in yesterday’s tallies is still in the lead on 1,522 and is edging closer to the 1,629 quota in order to be elected.

He is followed by Martin Harley (FG) on 1,482 after he received 197 of Connolly’s transfers. Frank McBrearty (Ind) is on 1,278, Patrick McGowan (FF) on 1,271, Gary Doherty (SF) on 1,262, Gerry Crawford (FF) on 1,041, Niall McConnell (Ind) on 999, Charles Ward (100% Redress) on 958 and Dakota Nic Mheanman (SF) on 894.

Tony McDaid’s 642 votes will now be distributed.
