Fianna Fáil senator Niall Blaney and Independent Peter Casey have both been knocked out of the EU election race.

The Midlands North West constituency count continues in Castlebar where Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan is getting closer to the quota.

Fine Gael’s newcomer Nina Carberry and outgoing MEP Maria Walsh are both performing well, as is Barry Cowen (FF).

The 14th count results saw the elimination of the outspoken Independent candidate from Donegal, Peter Casey with 28,497 overall votes.

Former RTE broadcaster Ciaran Mullooly of Independent Ireland and Flanagan made gains in the distribution of Casey’s votes.

Senator Niall Blaney was eliminated on the sixteenth count with 34,074 overall votes. Blaney started with 30,387 first preference votes, with the majority from the Donegal electorate.

The final count is expected tonight.
