Donegal Rally Day 2: Edwards maintains lead as Devine chases

The second day of the 2024 Donegal International Rally is done but the titanic battle between its two main protagonists is far from over.

Welsh driver Matt Edwards has maintained his lead from the first day, but a back-and-forth battle over today’s eight stages has seen his lead over second-placed Callum Devine stay relatively steady.

The gap between the two men now stands at 16.2 seconds at the end of the day’s running, but neither has been resting on their laurels.

Edwards had a massive moment earlier this afternoon, his car ending up two wheels in the ditch on a fast left-hander – but his car and lead escaped unharmed.

Callum Devine had an even bigger moment however on the first trip through the High Glen stage, Devine spinning his Skoda and stalling – while also damaging his car’s front bumper heavily.

Devine lost around 13 seconds with the spin, but would gain back a chunk of that time on the final stage as Edwards lost 7.8 seconds with mixed weather conditions playing a factor as well.

Behind them is a great battle for the final step on the podium heading into Sunday.

Meirion Evans and his Toyota GR Yaris now sit third, 53.9 seconds behind the leader.

Cathan McCourt is only 6 seconds behind Evans in fourth, with David Kelly in fifth and Josh Moffett in sixth both around 15 seconds back from the podium places.

The table has been set perfectly for a day full of drama as the 2024 Donegal International Rally winner will be decided tomorrow.
