Large decrease in the number of people signing-on in Donegal

The number of people on the Live Register in Donegal has decreased sharply over the past year. 

According to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO), there was an 11.3 percent decrease in the number of people signing-on in the county in the 12 months to June, 2024. Donegal showed one of the highest drops, behind Kilkenny (-14.4%) and Cavan (-11.5%).

As of the end of last month, there were 8,475 in the county on the Live Register.

Nationally, the unadjusted Live Register total for June 2024 was 174,909. When seasonal effects are considered, the seasonally adjusted Live Register total for June 2024 was 171,500 or 1,300 fewer people than May 2024.

Of the 174,909 people on the unadjusted Live Register in June 2024, 53.3% were male and 70.5% were Irish.

There were 18,529 people benefitting from the EU’s Temporary Protection Directive included in the Live Register figures for June, a decrease of 586 people from May.

Meath was the only county that recorded an increase in the number of people on the Live Register in the 12 months to June 2024 – (+4.5%).

The number of people on the Live Register for one year or more in June 2024 was 62,106, which was 3,668 fewer people (-5.6%) than a year earlier. There were 112,803 people on the Live Register for less than one year, which represents just under two-thirds of the total number on the Live Register.
