Former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has confirmed he won’t contest the general election.

The former Fine Gael leader stood down as Taoiseach in April.

Varadkar joins a long list of Fine Gael TDs not seeking re-election, including Donegal TD Joe McHugh.

“I am making this decision at a time when the Fine Gael party is in good shape,” Varadkar said in a statement last night.

“I shall, of course, complete my term in Dáil and will continue to be a full time TD until it is dissolved.”
