Laghey pulls together for little Aaron Langan

A fantastic fundraiser is taking place next week to support a much-loved local Laghey boy, Aaron Langan.

Aaron, the son of Dermot and Sinead, has lived with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy since his diagnosis at 18 months old. Now aged 7, Aaron deals with the daily impact of DMD, which causes deteriorating muscles, including his heart.

All the while, he’s a beautiful, happy, adventurous and funny little boy.

On 17th August, a team of 12 volunteers including Aaron’s dad Dermot, family and friends will be climbing Errigal AND cycling 100km home for a charity auction. The funds raised will go towards Aaron’s future care needs, with donations going towards MD Ireland and Liquid Therapy.

Training is well underway and community events are taking place in the lead up to the 17th to support the worthy cause.

Aaron’s story, as told by his mum Sinead, says he is a “happy go lucky little boy who is full of life.”

Sinead described how the DMD was “every parent’s worst nightmare”.

“Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a rare muscle disease which affects boys. Aaron and all boys with Duchenne cannot produce a protein called Dystrophin that strengthens and repairs muscles,” Sinead wrote on GoFundMe.

“Because of this all of the body’s muscles deteriorate over time and this also includes the heart.

“Duchenne is a terminal diagnosis and the lifespan varies from child to child. Every boy with Duchenne which is also known as DMD progresses differently.

“There is no cure at the minute, although Gene Therapy is looking very promising as a treatment which hopefully will see many living longer fulfilling lives, although this is still a long way to go

“We cannot sit and wait for that day to come and we are not sure if it will come in time for Aaron and must think of his future needs where he will need a lot of additional care.”
