Derry City FC has announced the sad passing of legendary former manager Jim McLaughlin, aged 83.

Mr McLaughlin is the only team manager to win the Treble in the League of Ireland.

The proud Derry native both played and managed the Candystripes over his career. As manager, he led City to the historic domestic Treble in the 1988-89 season.

Prior to his Brandywell return, he had dominated Irish football, securing league titles with both Dundalk and Shamrock Rovers. His tenure at Milltown also saw him guide the club for three of the historic four in a row league successes from 1984-87.

‘Gentleman Jim’ was awarded the Freedom of Derry City and Strabane District Council in 2019 in recognition of his achievements in Irish Football. Jim’s contribution was recognised throughout Irish football and he was awarded Special Merit Awards by both the Football Association of Ireland and the Soccer Writers Association.

A tribute from Derry City FC today said: “All connected to Derry City would like to pass on our condolences to his wife Reina; his children Sean, Paul, Martin and Jane, as well as his many grandchildren.”
