The Donegal flags have been flying throughout the Paralympics this past fortnight, and the pride surged yesterday as para cyclist Katie-George Dunlevy cinched Ireland’s first Gold medal of the games.

Proud parents John, a native of Mountcharles, and Alana Dunlevy were beaming with emotion as their daughter collected her second medal yesterday.

Crawley-born Katie-George Dunlevy and her pilot Linda Kelly put in a spectacular performance to win the Women’s B Individual Time Trial with a time of 38:16.58. Adding to their silver on the track, this is Dunlevy’s seventh Paralympic medal.

The celebrations echoed back home as the Donegal Bay Cycling cheered on their club member’s achievement.

Speaking to RTE Sport yesterday, Katie-George was asked to put the race into words and replied: “Pain is the word!”

She added: “It was a really, really challenging course. Really technical. I thought we were going to come off a few times but that’s racing for you.

“I’ve been in many races where it’s not over ‘til you cross that line so you’ve just got to keep going and just hope the other bikes maybe fade. You’ve just got to keep strong, keep racing, keep believing, just keep racing to that finish line.”
