Two drivers clocked speeding excessively in Inishowen

Gardaí from Buncrana Roads Policing Unit yesterday stopped two drivers whom they detected travelling well in excess of an 80 Kph speed limit.

One was clocked doing 116 Kph and the other 103 Kph. Fixed Charge Penalty Notices were issued to both drivers.

“With the wet and dull conditions, there will be reduced visibility,” a garda spokesperson said.

“Slow down and allow extra distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you. Slow down and help save lives. Speed kills.”

The appeal comes on the eve of the funeral of Donna McDermott, who was in her mid-thirties, which is due to take place tomorrow. She died following a two-car crash at Quigley’s Point on Friday night. The teen driver of the second car has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

The late Ms McDermott was the fifth person to die on Donegal’s roads in just thirteen days.

This latest tragedy now brings the number of people killed on Donegal’s roads so far this year to 13 – three higher than last year’s total.
