Termon 2-15 v 1-08 Naomh Muire

By Charlie Collins

A late burst of 1-07 by Termon saw off a tough challenge presented by Naomh Muire who stayed in this contest for a long time.

Termon had arrived back in another Intermediate Championship semi-final at O Donnell Park after winning all four of their Group games and beating Red Hughs in the Quarter-Final. Naomh Muire had narrowly lost two of their Group games but had impressively beaten Milford in the quarter-finals. So Termon were favourites in many people’s eyes but well aware of the challenge Naomh Mhuire would present.

And they proved that with the first three points of the game from Eoin Martin (free), Harry Harden (mark) and Shaun Burns (play). It took until the 18th minute and six wides before Termon finally scored, Enda McCormick’s free quickly followed by John James Sweeney from play, 0-03 to 0-02 to Naomh Mhuire.

Eoin Martin’s second free made it a two point game again but Bobby McGettigan from play and Daire McDaid’s free replied to level it up at four points apiece in the 24th minute. Jack O Donnell put Naomh Muire ahead again but Bobby McGettigan’s second point of the game sent them it level at Half-time, 0-05 points apiece. Harry Harden put Naomh Muire ahead again but fine scores from Enda McCormick and Daire McDaid replied quickly for Termon, but Harden levelled it up right away, 0-07 apiece.

Then a burst of scoring, Daire McDaid hammered the ball to the net after a super pass from John James Sweeney, Jamie Grant pointed, Daniel Devlin fisted to the Termon net after great work by Eoin Martin who then brought them level yet again at 1-08 apiece and all to play for.

Harry Harden received a black card immediately after that goal and that proved very costly as Termon moved to a higher gear to add 1-07 without reply. Jack Alcorn, Daire McDaid and two from Enda McCormick and Jamie Grant and second goal from Daire McDaid for 2-05 personal total wrapped up what was, despite the final scoreline a hard earned victory.
