Finn Harps FC have ended the season sixth on the table with a home defeat to Treaty United.

Full Time: 1-2

With Harps already locked in sixth place, tonight’s final match at Finn Park was a battle for seventh.

Treaty’s finishing spot would be decided by the result of this game as a win would see them finish in seventh spot, while a defeat would give Cobh Ramblers an opportunity to overtake them.

Harps included Kevin Jordan, Gavin Gilmore and Gavin McAteer in their starting line-up as they looked to the future and all performed well, the latter two looking very lively in attack.

The visitors had the first chance of the game in the seventh minute, Tony McNamee’s super block denying Chris Horgan’s goalbound shot. Two minutes later at the other end Conor Tourish’s low drive just flashing wide as Harps responded well.

Trpimir Vrljiack was next to let fly, his 25 yarded just clearing Oisín Cooney’s crossbar. A few minutes later, as play swung from end to end, Gavin Gilmore and Max Johnston in quick succession were denied by keeper Michael Dike, and then Gavin McAteer’s free-kick was a foot too high.

Harps went close again on the half hour, Conor Tourish getting a header on target after Tony McNamee and Jamie Watson had combined to set up the chance. Two minutes later Harps took the lead, Conor Tourish making no mistake this time with a glancing headed into the bottom corner past Dike. 1-0 to the Harps and despite a number of Treaty United corners and great chance for David Tarmey with a close range header, that’s how it remained until half-time.

Eight minutes into the second-half Success Edogun’s strong run took him into the Treaty box but his shot was blocked and then three minutes later Gavin McAteer fired just over after racing into the box.

On the hour after some fine play McAteer was just too high with his shot as Harps pushed hard for a second goal.

A second came in the 69th minute but not for Harps as Treaty sub cut inside and fired a cracking shot past Oisín Cooney from 20 yards out, giving the Harps keeper no chance, 1-1.

Both teams were giving all they had in this final game of the season which was good to see and in the 78th minute Treaty took the lead when Thomas Considine produced a super run and cross for fellow sub Mark Bryne to head home from six yards, 1-2 and Harps with work to do to get something from this game.

They tried hard right to get it but just couldn’t get that second goal and the season ended with a defeat and sixth place in the league table and outside the play-offs spot.

Finn Harps: Oisín Cooney, Jamie Watson, Conor Tourish, Noe Baba, Kevin Jordan (Luke O Brien 60mins), Tony McNamee, Dave Cawley (Matt Makinson 87mins), Success Edogun, Gavin McAteer, Max Johnston (Bruce Strachan 60mins), Gavin Gilmore (Sean Patton 64mins).
