Liam Neeson’s Donegal-based action thriller has made the ‘Rotten Tomatoes’ top 50 Best New Action Movies of 2024.

‘In the Land of Saints and Sinners (ITLOSAS)’, which was shot in the south west of the county in 2022, has been ‘Certified Fresh’ and is now No. 9 in its category on the review website.

Rotten Tomatoes collects film and TV reviews from critics who publish at outlets worldwide. These reviews are rated either ‘Fresh’ or ‘Rotten’, which contributes to a film or TV show’s ‘Tomatometer’ score.

To qualify as ‘Certified Fresh’, films or TV shows must meet the following requirements: A Tomatometer score of 75% or higher, with at least five reviews from Top Critics.

ITLOSAS has scored 83%, just ahead of ‘The Fall Guy’ which lies in tenth place on 81%.

“ In the Land of Saints and Sinners, released earlier in 2024 and one of the most esteemed entries in the later Liam Neeson action catalogue, has gone Certified Fresh,” the review website announced this week.

“Critics Consensus: Well-written and classically constructed, In the Land of Saints and Sinners is one of the better action thrillers Liam Neeson’s made in recent years.”

The latest Neeson thriller went on general release in American cinemas last March, and was released on Netflix in April. Since then, it has received rave reviews from numerous media outlets.

Shot in spring of 2022 south west Donegal, it got its world premiere last autumn at the 2023 Venice Film Festival.

The thriller, starring Oscar nominees Neeson and Kerry Condon, was filmed over a seven week period, mainly in Glencolmcille, but also in Kilcar, Killybegs and Ardara. Set in a rural Irish village, the adventure film tells the story of a retired assassin, Finbar (Neeson), who is forced into a game of cat and mouse with three terrorists. A damaged Finbar is forced to fight for redemption after a lifetime of sins. The question is, what price is he willing to pay, as he finds himself drawn into a lethal game of cat and mouse.

Neeson has starred in dozens of films, including Schindler’s List, Taken and Batman Begins. Condon was nominated for nearly every award possible for her supporting performance in The Banshees of Inisherin. The starry ensemble of  In the Land of Saints and Sinners also includes Colm Meaney (Star Trek: The Next Generation), Oscar-nominee Ciaran Hinds (Belfast), Jack Gleeson (Game of Thrones), Desmond Eastwood (Normal People) and Sarah Greene (Bad Sisters).
