Downings 1-7 v 1-6 Warrenpoint (Down) A.E.T

Downings are the Ulster LGFA Junior Football Champions after a gutsy extra-time win over Warrenpoint of County Down.

In the process, they also became the first Donegal team to lift the Junior crown.

Despite the final score suggesting it was a completely defensive contest Downings got off to a rapid start – pulling out a 0-04 to no score lead after just eight minutes.

Downings would hold onto the lead into the half-time break, but only with a two-point advantage, 0-06 to 0-04.

Denise Doherty then hit the back of the net shortly into the second-half, giving Downings a 5-point lead – but after that, they wouldn’t score again until the second period of extra time.

Warrenpoint would score a goal in the fiftieth minute, as they chipped away at Downings’ advantage with the tying score for the Down side coming three minutes from time.

Two hard-faught periods of extra time would follow, but Shannon McGroddy’s early first period strike was the only score as Downings held on to win the Ulster title.
