Gardaí have been busy carrying out road safety checkpoints in recent days, on what has been a week of carnage on Donegal roads.
The move comes after three people lost their lives following last Friday’s horrific crash in Liscooley.
Officers from Glenties and Killybegs Garda Stations are conducting checkpoints on the roads in the south of the county today, alongside the Donegal Town Roads Policing Unit. These checkpoints will continue at various locations throughout the day.
A similar initiative took place around the Letterkenny District on Wednesday. During that operation, Gardaí from Letterkenny Roads Policing Unit arrested a driver on suspicion of drug driving after they tested positive for cannabis. It was also established that the driver did not have a driving licence or insurance.
“Please drive safely and always make wise decisions when it comes to road safety,” a garda spokesperson said.
“Making a decision to drive while under the influence of alcohol/drugs can have devastating consequences. Excess speed can and does kill so please slow down! Wear your seatbelt and ensure that others in your vehicle are wearing theirs also. Never use/hold a mobile phone while driving. Ensure that your vehicle is in a roadworthy condition and that your documents are in order.”
Meanwhile, the first funeral of the three victims of last Friday night’s horror crash in Liscooley took place yesterday.
Gordon ‘Gordy’ Galbraith, who was in his late 30s, was laid to rest in Castlederg cemetery.
The funeral of his friend, Ryan Glenn (25), who was travelling in the same car as him, will take place today.
The third victim, Samuel Hunter, who was in his 70s, late of Murlog Lifford and formerly of Cranford, will be laid to rest this afternoon in Milford.
He, along with his wife Dolores, was taken to hospital with serious injuries but passed away on Tuesday morning. Mrs Hunter remains seriously ill.
He is the third person to die as a result of the horror crash, which occurred just inside the 50Kph zone, on the Killygordon side of the village at around 10pm on Friday. Friends Ryan Glenn and Gordy Galbraith, both from Castlederg, County Tyrone, were pronounced dead at the scene. They were travelling in a Ford Focus that struck a Kia Sportage carrying the Hunters, which was coming from the Ballybofey direction.
A second woman in the Sportage, aged in her 30s, was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
