Employee dismissed as Gardaí investigate ‘alleged fraud’ at Ballybofey plant

Gardaí have confirmed they are investigating ‘alleged fraud’ at a major employer in east Donegal.

Donegal Daily understands at least one employee at the Mulrines drinks production facility in Ballybofey has been dismissed since irregularities were uncovered last month.

It is believed that the alleged fraud has resulted in the family-owned business being out of pocket for ‘substantial’ amounts of money.

The activity was discovered during a routine audit at the company.

A spokesperson for the Garda Press Office confirmed to Donegal Daily they are investigating the allegations.

“Gardaí in Co Donegal are investigating a complaint of alleged fraud at a business in Ballybofey, made on 19th December, 2024. Investigation ongoing,” they said.

We have contacted Mulrines for a comment.

Established in 1919, the fourth-generation business employs over 220 people across sites in Donegal, Tyrone, Kildare and Wales.

Mulrines produce a range of fruit juices and smoothies for the retail and foodservice sectors across Ireland and abroad. Most of their juices are made from their 289 acres of orchards located in Co Kildare.
