Paul Hume, Chairperson of Letterkenny Credit Union, has been elected onto the board of the Irish League of Credit Unions.

Mr Hume is a nephew of the late John Hume, who was one of the driving forces for the establishment of the credit union movement in Ireland and was a founding member of Derry Credit Union.

“We are sure his late uncle John Hume will be very proud that Paul is following in his footsteps,” said a notice from Letterkenny Credit Union.

On his election, Paul paid tribute to the outgoing league member Jim Toner who has given many years of sterling service.

Letterkenny Credit Union, established in 1962, has seen significant growth over the years. Starting with just 24 members, £27 in shares, and no loans, the credit union now boasts a membership of 28,500. In 2024, the organization’s total assets surpassed €120 million for the first time.
