There is outrage amongst the local community in Newtowncunningham, after a number of new trees that had been planted along the town’s main street were deliberately destroyed.

At least five of the young saplings were severely damaged, with the tops of each of the trees being forcibly ripped off or bent.

The Newtowncunningham Tidy Towns committee expressed their sadness at the destruction of the trees – especially just one day after the local community had come together for a Spring Clean of litter across the town.

One of the young trees that was damaged on Newtowncunningham’s main street.

“It’s with great sadness that someone (saw) the need to break the new trees planted in Newtowncunningham Street,” a Tidy Towns member posted to the group’s Facebook page.

“It’s very sad people can’t leave them alone. If anyone has any information please get in contact or if anyone has CCTV on the street can you please check who the culprit was who had little else to do so their details can be passed onto the Gardaí.”

Local Councillor Paul Canning has also offered an award to anyone that comes forward with information leading to the conviction of the vandal.

“I am offering a €500 reward to anyone the offers information that leads to the conviction of the culprit that damaged the trees on Newtowncunngham main street last night,” Councillor Canning said in a statement.

“Disappointed to say the least.”
