Illistrin NS teachers hatch plan to raise new baby chicks!

Teachers at Illistrin National School have successfully hatched a plan to raise new baby chicks at the school.

Ms Devenney, Ms McLaughlin and Ms Edwards have led the way in the initiative, showing the fifth class students the life cycle of a chick in the most practical way possible.

The process began as the students learned about candling – shining a bright light on each egg to check on the progress of the young chicks inside.

With an incubator placed in the classroom, the students had a birds-eye view as the chicks began to hatch – with cameras also set up to catch the baby chicks breaking free of their shells.

The chicks have now come to life in the class, with the next step now naming them.

“It’s been such an exciting time for the children learning all about the life cycle of a chick,” Ms Devenney said.

“They have learned so much and are so excited to finally see our chicks! It’s been so interesting watching them grow from day 1-21 by candling them.”

“One of the children said that it’s been incredible to see something grow and come to life in our classroom. All of the classes have taken an interest and have been waiting patiently for the chicks to hatch.”

“We’re also going to get all classes involved in naming them by having a school vote!”
