A community in Galway city has been rocked after the tragic death of a young girl in a road accident.

The 6-year-old girl was killed after she was struck by a lorry while riding her bike, at the junction of the Headford Road and Sandyvale Lawn at around noon yesterday.

She passed away at the scene of the crash, with her body being removed to University Galway Hospital ahead of a post-mortem examination.

The driver of the truck, a man aged in his 30s, was uninjured in the collision.

Gardaí have appealed to any witnesses to the collision to come forward.
