Police have searched a property in Tyrone in connection with Tuesday’s massive €2.2 million drugs haul in east Donegal.

In one of the biggest ever seizures in the county, Gardai and Revenue officers found approximately 112kgs of herbal cannabis at a business premises on the outskirts of Ballybofey on Tuesday last.

Two brothers appeared in court on Thursday charged in connection with the haul which had an estimated value of €2.2 million.

The PSNI confirmed to Donegal Daily that they carried out a search in the Clady area of Tyrone, near the Donegal border on Wednesday last.

“Police received a request for assistance from An Garda Siochana in relation to an ongoing investigation,” a PSNI spokesperson said.

“As a result of this request, officers conducted a search in the Clady area on Wednesday, 2nd April.”

They did not confirm whether or not anything of interest was found during the raid.

We asked Gardai for a comment.

Two men were arrested following a swoop on a premises in the border area of Carrickmagrath, around 4kms from Ballybofey, by officers from the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau (GNDOCB), the Donegal Divisional Drugs Unit and Revenue’s Custom Service on Tuesday.

Siblings, Patrick McGinty (38) and Michael McGinty (30), each with an address at Carrickmagrath, Ballybofey, were brought before Judge Ciaran Liddy at Letterkenny District Court on Thursday afternoon.

Each of the men were charged with being in possession of a controlled drug, namely cannabis, for the purpose of selling or otherwise supplying it to another.

Neither man spoke during the brief hearing.

Mr Rory O’Brien, solicitor for Michael McGinty, said his client will contest the charges against him.

“He denies any wrongdoing,” Mr O’Brien said, adding he was very keen that the State “expedite matters as quickly as possible”.

Patrick McGinty was represented by solicitor Ms Donna Ponsonby.

Legal aid was granted to each of the accused.

Judge Liddy adjourned the case until June for directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
