Gardai have issued warnings to young drivers after two were arrested for driving under the influence of drugs.

The drivers were both apprehended in the Letterkenny area yesterday and today.

The first incident happened when members of the Letterkenny Roads Policing Unit stopped an uninsured learner driver yesterday.

The driver then tested positive for cannabis at the roadside and they were arrested.

The car was seized and Gardai say court proceedings will follow.

Earlier today, Letterkenny Roads Policing Unit stopped a Novice driver who did not have ‘N plates’ displayed on their car.

The driver also tested positive for cannabis and an arrest was made.

A Fixed charge penalty notice will issue for the non-display of ‘N plates’ which means a fine of €120 and 2 penalty points.

Further test results are awaited and court proceedings may then follow.

A Garda spokesperson pleaded with young drivers not to get behind the wheel if they have been drinking or taking drugs.

A spokesperson said “Never drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Help save lives on the roads by being a responsible driver. Never take dangerous risks.”
