A three-goal performance from Donegal’s Minor footballers saw them hang on in their Ulster Minor Championship opener this afternoon.
They defeated Monaghan at the O’Donnell Park in Letterkenny, in a game which saw their provincial rivals surge late on.
Both sides got off to a flying start, striking goals inside the first five minutes of the contest – Tomas Carr finding the back of the net for Donegal.
They would enter the half-time interval up by two points, but that advantage would be stretched considerably in the opening minutes of the second half.
A Kalvin McLaughlin goal and two quick-fire points saw Donegal’s lead suddenly extended to eight.
A third goal for Donegal via Conor Farrell stemmed a flow of scores for Monaghan – who with less than 10 minutes to play scored their second goal of the contest to bring them within five.
Hearts were well and truly in mouths for Donegal then when Harry Treanor struck for Monaghan in the dying moments, which combined with another score left only one in it.
However Donegal would respond with a score of their own, and hold on to progress in this remarkable affair – on a final score of 3-10 to 3-08.
