The Donegal Firefighters Association has paid tribute to the five fire brigade services who responded to the huge blaze which broke out at St Mary’s Church in Derrybeg on Monday morning last.

The firefighters from Gaoth Dobhair, Dungloe, Falcarragh, Glenties, and Letterkenny worked throughout the night to bring the blaze under control.

Unfortunately, the blaze was so intense it completely gutted the church.

The Association says it stands in solidarity with the people of Derrybeg who lost their church in the blaze.

A spokesperson said “Our deepest sympathies go out to the people of Derrybeg after the heartbreaking loss of St Mary’s Church in a fire during the early hours of Easter Monday morning.

“The destruction of such a cherished place is a huge blow to the entire community. 🕊️

“A sincere thank you to all DFA Members who responded, crews from Gweedore, Dungloe, Falcarragh, Glenties, and Letterkenny. Your tireless efforts ensured that no injuries were reported.

“While the ashes mark the end of a chapter, they also lay the foundation for a new beginning. Out of the ashes shall rise a new hope and belief for the future. We stand with the community and commend all involved for their dedication and bravery.”
