A new RTÉ documentary series will follow two Donegal fishermen and their stories.

Tarrac na Farraige is a four-part bilingual documentary series, which will follow fishermen from across the island of Ireland – explore whether or not the fishing tradition here can survive and thrive.

The stories of Donegal natives Ciarán Doherty and Ryan Murphy will be told throughout the series which will be broadcast on Thursdays, the first episode airing on Thursday the 8th of May at 7pm on RTÉ One.

Donegal native Ciaran Doherty, whose story will be one of the central parts of Tarrac na Farraige.

Ciarán is the Operations Manager and Skipper with the Áine Fishing Company, a company started by his father in 1970 when he was just 19 that now employs a team of 16. Ciarán first went to sea at the age of four and has been fishing since, and is also chairperson of the Killybegs Fishermen’s Organisation. He has also been a vocal critic of the government’s lack of action on fishing quotas.

The series will explore the challenges and community spirit that encapsulate the Irish fishing community.

However, with rising costs, falling profits and many of the most experienced fishermen now reaching retirement age, the series will examine the uncertain future the fishing sector faces.
