Plans are underway to fit new gates at the Old Killaghtee Church.

Funding has been secured by Dunkineely Community CLG to repair the gates and continue further renovation work at the historic church.

The restoration of the gates is the latest step in the preservation efforts that the local community has undertaken to maintain the site of the old church, which is believed to have been constructed in the 1100s.

It was last used as a place of worship in the 1700s – and locals having been committed to preserving the site in recent times.

These restoration works have been made possible with Community Monument funding, under the Adopt A Monument scheme – which helped with other renovation works at the historic site in 2023.

“Dunkineely Community CLG (DCL) are happy to announce that we have received funding, under the Community Monument Fund, to repair the gates at the old Killaghtee Church on St. John’s Point,” the organisation said.

“This site has been ‘Adopted’ by the local community under the Adopt a Monument Scheme, and is a site of significant historical value for the Protestant and Catholic church as well as all locals.”

“The funding will allow us to continue our renovation work, under the careful leadership of Dedalus Architecture; work that we began two years ago, with the renovation of the church itself.”

“A big thank you to Donegal County Council for supporting our application throughout the process.”
