Donegal County Council has been urged to install a barrier at the Quay in Ramelton after two cars plunged into the River Lennon in recent months.
Two motorists had lucky escapes when their vehicles rolled off the slipway in separate incidents. Both cars were unoccupied at the time.
Councillor Pauric McGarvey highlighted the incidents to the council this week, explaining that in the first case, two young women happened to be outside of their car when it entered the water.
“About two weeks ago, the same thing happened,” Cllr McGarvey said. “A couple was out looking about, and the car took off down the quay.”
Speaking at Tuesday’s sitting of the Letterkenny-Milford MD, Cllr McGarvey said that the council must do all it can to prevent any further accidents.
“If there had been children strapped into the back of a car, and the tide in, they wouldn’t have got out,” he warned.
Cllr McGarvey also asked for signage to be put up to warn people of the dangers.
Cllr Liam Blaney, seconding the motion, said that the only solution is to have a barrier at the slipway and have it locked, with access provided locally.
Donegal County Council is now set to bring the matter before the Rural Regeneration, Flooding, Marine and Roads Sections to see if a barrier is feasible and if it is included in any of the sections’ plans. An assessment will also be carried out regarding appropriate signage.
