Donegal Deputy Charles Ward has come out in support of local firefighters saying the presence of union representation was crucial for them.
Deputy Charles Ward was speaking in support of the Trade Union Recognition Bill 2021, which is legislation that would provide mandatory union recognition where 20% or more of the workforce are members of a union.
The Donegal Deputy said: ‘Union representation is extremely important and ensuring that union representatives have access to their members’ places of work is vital.
“It is also important that unions are able to negotiate with employers on pay, hours and conditions. Sadly, this isn’t always the case in Ireland as employers have no obligation to even acknowledge trade unions.’
He added: ‘I myself have personally had experiences of employers failing to recognise and engage with trade unions in the past, and it is such a shame, trade unions offer numerous benefits to their members and are so often needed for the purpose of negotiation and representation.’
The 100% Redress Party TD said the presence of union representation was ‘crucial’ in fighting for adequate resources and accountability for Donegal firefighters, stating the union served as a vital link between the workers, Donegal County Council and the Fire Service Management.
He also told the Dáil that unions representing healthcare workers have been ‘instrumental’ in helping reach the recent agreement with the HSE at the Workplace Relations Commission over staffing and recruitment.
Deputy Ward said: ‘Workers have a right to be represented, and represented by people who have the experience and knowledge to deal with workplace disputes and fight for better conditions.’
