A woman has been fined €500 following a theft from Dunnes Stores in Letterkenny.

Elzbieta Baran (56), of Highfield, Loughnagin, Letterkenny, pleaded guilty to the theft of household items to the value of €151.18 from Dunnes Stores, Oldtown, on November 21, 2024.

Baran appeared before Letterkenny District Court for sentencing.

A probation and welfare report on the accused was directed in March following her guilty plea.

A Polish interpreter was present in court to assist Baran.

Mr Rory O’Brien, solicitor for Baran, told the court that his client is planning to return to her native Poland.

“She has had a difficult period of time,” Mr O’Brien said. “She tells me she has refrained from drinking, and as a result she does not have a sense of isolation, which she did previously.”

Judge Éiteáin Cunningham said she took on board the woman’s acknowledgement of her wrongdoing and also of her intention to go to Poland.

Baran was convicted of theft and fined €500 with five months to pay.
