Woman charged with dangerous driving in Donegal Town

May 17, 2025

A woman has appeared in court charged with two counts of dangerous driving in Donegal Town.

Olena Maiboroda was before Ballyshannon District Court.

Maiboroda, with an address at Mountain View, Barrack Street, Kinlough, was charged with dangerous driving at Druminin, Donegal Town on April 20, 2025.

The 52-year-old was further charged with dangerous driving at Spierstown, Donegal Town on the same date. The charges are contrary to section 53 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961.

Maiboroda also faces two charges contrary to section 22 of the Road Traffic Act, 2010, namely that she did refuse to permit the taking of a specimen of urine or blood.

The court heard that when charged, Maiboroda told gardai: “I feel bad. I won’t sleep.”

To another charge, Maiboroda was said to have responded: “I have nothing to say. I have to go to my kids. I did not kill anyone. They twisted my hands.”

Her solicitor, Mr Gerry McGovern, applied for a Ukrainian interpreter to be certified in the case and Judge Michael Connellan agreed.

Mr McGovern said that the charges were “quite serious” and he asked that legal aid be extended to cover a junior counsel. Barrister Mr Alexander Smyth BL was assigned in the matter by Judge Connellan.

Mr McGovern said that the case and the charges are “significant”.

Maiboroda was remanded on continuing bail to appear again on September 5, 2025. Directions from the DPP may be given
