A woman has pleaded guilty to seriously assaulting another woman in Letterkenny.

Philomena O’Hara tendered guilty pleas to two charges when she appeared before Letterkenny Circuit Court.

The 49-year-old appeared via video link from Australia, where she is currently based, to be arraigned before Judge John Aylmer.

O’Hara, who has an address at Bohirril, Letterkenny, pleaded guilty to charges relating to an incident at Broomfield Heights, Letterkenny, on July 5, 2020.

O’Hara pleaded guilty to assaulting Loretta Kelly and causing her harm, contrary to section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1997.

She also pleaded guilty to a charge of producing an article capable of inflicting serious injury. She was charged that, during the course of a dispute or a fight that she produced in a manner likely unlawfully to intimidate another person, namely a drinking glass, being an article capable of inflicting serious injury.

The victim in the case, Ms Kelly, was present in court for the brief hearing.

Mr Peter Nolan BL, instructed by solicitor Mr Rory O’Brien, said his client can be contacted by the Probation Service to commence a report. He said O’Hara is planning to come back to Ireland later this year.

Asked by Judge Aylmer if she was planning to return permanently, Mr Nolan said: “I believe so”.

Judge Aylmer adjourned the case until October. Noting that the prosecution consented to the remote arraignment of O’Hara, Judge Aylmer asked that a probation and welfare report be prepared, to include an assessment on suitability for community service.
