A young Co Donegal student has won a nationwide poster competition.

Fearne Quinn from 6th class in St Eunan’s National School in Raphoe, won the competition to raise awareness of carbon monoxide and the dangers that it can pose in our homes.

Gas Networks Ireland, in partnership with Junior Achievement Ireland (JAI), called for entries to a carbon monoxide safety poster competition from students who had recently completed the ‘Energize’ programme. T

The Energize programme delivers science to primary school students around Ireland through practical and engaging lessons to foster interest in the subject so students continue with it to second level education.

Carbon monoxide awareness is an important element of the programme.

Commenting as he presented St Eunan’s National School with an iPad for use in Fearne’s classroom, Gas Networks Ireland’s sustainability graduate Niall O’Connor said: “After completing the ‘Energize’ STEM educational programme, the poster competition gives students an opportunity to showcase their creativity while highlighting the importance of carbon monoxide safety in our homes. The competition received numerous amazing entries from all over Ireland, but Fearne’s submission stood out the most”.

Lucinda Nash, Junior Achievement Ireland’s Programme Coordinator said: “We are pleased to be able to bring programmes like ‘Energize’ to schools nationwide with Gas Networks Ireland. Energize explores the world of science, energy and safety in a fun and exciting way.”

In 2024, Gas Networks Ireland was appointed as a Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Champion by the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communication (DECC).
